WHAT IS SPRAY DRYING?

Transform Liquids into Powders with Precision: Discover the Power of Spray Drying

Spray drying is one of the most widely used drying methods in the drying industry as it inherent some unique advantages.

In simple terms spray drying is the transformation of a liquid feed into a dry and solid state by spraying the feed through a heated drying medium evaporating the water present in the atomized feed.

The liquid feed will eventually turn in to powder. Turning a liquid feed into a dry powder ensures some favorable aspects: Extended product shelf life, reduced product volume and weight, improved food safety and lower production costs.

Why drying at all?

Drying of solids is a chemical process mastered since ancient times with drying of foods such as plums and grapes. Today, drying is used in various applications in numerous industries. The most notable are: Pharmaceutical, chemicals and food/feed.

Drying is defined as the removal of liquid from a substance in either solid, semi-solid or liquid form through the use of heat to obtain a dry and solid product. Evaporation is the most common form of drying.

Within the food and feed industry there are many different purposes drying: Extended storage life, quality enhancement, ease of handling, preparation for further processing, sanitation requirements.

What can spray dried powders be used for?

Quiet frequently we meet raw product producers that are unaware of the benefits in spray drying their product into powder. Often raw product can be turn into high quality protein ingredients with end use in the food or petfood industries.

Why Spray Drying?

Shelf life is extended by removing water from the product to such an extent that bacterial activity ceases. Liquids containing suspended dry solids can also be dried by evaporating the liquid (mostly water) to leave behind the dry solids in a powder form.

As an additional benefit, the spray drying of liquids considerably reduces their volume, thus resulting in lower storage and transport costs. Furthermore, the drying technique is used to cope with seasonal fluctuations in the supply and demand of raw materials. Spray-dried products can be stored in powder form and transformed back into liquid by adding water whenever they are needed.

Horizontal Spray Drying

The horizontal box spray dryer is the core product of SANOVO TECHNOLOGY PROCESS. This type of spray dryer offers some unique benefits when compared to the vertical spray drying towers.

Unlike the enormous vertical spray drying towers, horizontal spray dryers do not require tall buildings to surround them. Most times a horizontal spray drying plant will fit in already existing building thus reducing the cost of installation significantly.

Furthermore, SANOVO TECHNOLOGY PROCESS' spray dryer makes use of nozzle atomizers which have a lower energy consumption than rotary atomizers. Read more about the benefits of the spray dryer.
